Millennium Shoes

Its seen throughout the world, footwear thrown over cables and tree branches, but what is it that makes people want to throw their shoes over a cable? Some might say its its drug dealers and gangs marking their turf. This can’t be the case all the time because why would a drug dealer want to bring so much attention to themselves? Others have said that it’s because somebody died and they do that in memory of that person.

Other reasons for people throwing their old sneakers is as a rite of passage. This includes to celebrate an event, for example, somebody just got a new pair of Air Jordans and they don’t need their old pair, so they toss them. In the picture below, you can see a young boy scout throwing his shoes as a right of passage.

The most likely reason is because of kids. Kids get bored, so they see it as a game to try to get their old sneakers to hang. You also have bullies that will steal shoes off the younger kids and play a game of keep away to toss them up.

We will never know the real reason why we see sneakers tossed onto cable wires. Could it be that people are just throwing them up there so they can be struck by lightning and they can be like Mike?
